Just 120km north of Cape Town, lies the idyllic West Coast beach town of Langebaan. Known for its mild climate and magnificent turquoise lagoon, the location is a water sporting enthusiasts paradise.
Abounding in sailing, kayaking, kite-surfing, and fishing activities, plenty of opportunities for water sporting novices also exist to learn the ropes by embarking on kite-surfing school as well as water-skiing and windsurfing lessons.
As a wetland the tidal mud flats of the lagoon host many local bird species and also attract migratory birds every year where thousands of sea-birds roost on sheltered islands. Langebaan Lagoon was proclaimed a Ramsar site in 1988 – a wetland recognised and protected by the international Ramsar Convention as being of great importance to birdlife. The most southern end of the lagoon is out of bounds for any activity in an effort to protect the rare water birds in the area. Flocks of flamingos, rare oyster catchers, gulls, and many other waders can be seen here.
Langebaan town borders onto the scenic West Coast National Park where one can enjoy game viewing, cycling, and hiking. Kraalbaai, a secluded white sandy beach and dedicated picnic area within the reserve boasts crystal clear turquoise waters – a breath-taking sight reminiscent of a Mediterranean paradise.
During August and September, the land blooms with an array of colourful wild flowers attracting thousands of tourists to view the radiant natural display.
Close to the town of Langebaan, is the West Coast Fossil Park – the only fossil park in South Africa. Visitors can hunt for their own fossils, bike, hike and enjoy horse riding through the park.
Other activities to make your stay in Langebaan memorable include a leisurely yacht cruise on a 39ft catamaran, a thrilling rubberduck ride, fishing charter adventure or wetbike.
The Langebaanweg Airforce Base is 16km outside Langebaan and is home to both the Central Flying School and the Silver Falcons – the South African Airforce aerobatic display aircraft. Several airshows are staged here with details available from the local Tourism office. For picture perfect golfing days, the 18-hole Gary Player, Black Knight design course forms part of the Langebaan Country Estate.
Thali Thali Game Reserve nearby is home to a variety of African wildlife such as giraffe, zebra and antelope making it ideal to have both a beach and safari holiday in one. Despite its small size, Langebaan truly is an epic holiday destination with something for every taste and type of traveller.
